We will attempt to give you a view of many of the
places that you may want to visit while in this area.
CADES COVE: This is a must and is located
within 16 or 17 miles from the cabin via Hwy 321 and Townsend or
thru the park via Metcalf Bottoms. I prefer the Metcalf
Bottoms route because you are constantly following the river.
The drive is beautiful whether it be spring, summer, fall or my
favorite the winter. Along the way you can stop on the side of
the road and enjoy the sights of the flowing river and let your eyes
wonder into the deepness of the woods or the flowing river. You will pass the Y
where the locals go to swim and picnic on the grassy beach.
Now Cades Cove. Do not go to Cades Cove and be in a hurry.
Sometimes the traffic can be heavy. The traffic is heavy not
necessarily because of the number of vehicles but because people see
the wildlife, (deer, turkey, bear) old churches, former homes and
necessary outbuildings of the people that formerly lived in the
cove, barns, streams running across the roadway, a former mill that
still grinds corn and is sold to the people that visit.
I have not mentioned the different plants and the large open fields
with the mountains in the background. About half way thru the
11 mile loop there is complete bathroom facilities where the mill
and an old home is located. Words
cannot describe how enjoyable this visit can be if you will just
take the time to let yourself enjoy what you see.
Also the nice thing about this trip is there are
no charges or fees to pay even if you decide to picnic in the cove.
There are donation boxes located thru the cove to help pay for the
upkeep since the federal government has limited spending in recent
years.
I will attempt to give you an insight to the some
of the many
hiking trails that you might want to enjoy on the visit to the Great
Smoky Mountains.
ABRAMS FALLS TRAIL
LOCATION IS IN CADES COVE: It is a
relatively flat trail that leads to the water falls that is 20 foot
high. It is 5 miles round trip and there is a 340 foot gain in
elevation.
ANDREWS BALD
LOCATION IS AT CLINGMANS DOME: This is very
easy trail that begins at the 3rd highest point in the eastern
United States. This trail is 3.6 miles round trip. It is
said to be best in the spring and fall but it is something to see
anytime of the year. The balds were made by the local farmers
taking their cattle up to the highest point for grazing of their
cattle.
LITTLE GREENBRIER
LOCATION IS JUST INSIDE THE PARK ON LYON SPRING
RD: This is a very short trail but you can take some other
trails that run into it for a much longer hike. The trail
itself is only 1.4 miles and has a 400 foot gain in elevation.
ROUNDTOP
LOCATION IS ON LYON SPRING RD: This trail is
7.5 miles and the elevation gain is 2600 foot. If you
complete this hike to the end, you will have to cross the Little
River. Water can sometimes be waist deep. You will have
some nice views of Wears Valley and the mountains.
FOUR WHEELING
East Tennessee is fast becoming well know for
those that like to ride their 4 wheelers. Perhaps the best known
area is called Coal Creek OHV. The area is easily found
and is accessible year round. The name of the town that
is nearest to it is called Oliver Springs, TN. You also go thru Oak
Ridge TN to get to Oliver Springs. Our cabin is located about
11/2 hours from the Coal Creek site.
ATOMIC MUSEUM
This museum is located in Oak Ridge TN which was
once know as the Manhattan Project. The museum is now called
the American Museum of Science and Energy and the cost is $5.00 for
adult and $3.00 for children. It has been a long
standing attraction in E. TN for both young and old for many years.
BICYCLING
Bicycles are available for rent in Townsend and
Cades Cove. In Townsend you can ride a very nice paved bike
trail for 9 miles. This trail goes from near the entrance to
the park to Kinzel Spring and it is mostly level. There are
several areas to visit during your ride. In Cades Cove
you can ride the 11 miles around the cove. There will be short
hills that you will want to walk. It is a very enjoyable ride
and you will probably see plenty of wildlife. Lyon Springs
road after you get to the park down to Metcalf Bottoms is a very
nice ride. The traffic is very light on the public road and
the visibility is pretty good.
TOWNSEND
The new Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center has
many good comments. They have a variety of items of interest
including a 450 gallon moonshine still in its original configuration.
They have a total of 17,000 feet of displays.
If tubing is in your plans then you will want to
visit the River Rat in Townsend. They also have Scooter cars
that you can ride around town.
Swimming in the river at the Y is a popular
activity. You can take a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch on
the grassy bank.
Horseback riding is available at different
locations.
